Inclusive User Testing — Guelph Accessibility Conference

Embedded below are my slides from the Guelph Accessibility Conference. If the embed is a hassle for you, you can view the slides directly on SlideShare.

About the Photos

Slide 4 is a photo from the Save the Dream and Sasol joint National Sport Day in Qatar. Normally I am wary of “disability tourism”, but the event managed to raise awareness for inclusivity partly by including high-profile Qatari athletes.

Slide 7 is a scan of the notes of student who was creating a floor plan using nothing but sign language from the instructor.

Slide 11 is from a train station in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic. It is a bit unfair of me to use the image, since the metal tracks laid over the stairs are probably not for a wheelchair, but more likely for delivery carts. Regardless, the image is compelling as an analogue to poor bolt-on efforts.

Slide 13 is a photo from the Deaf-Blind Camp of Maryland visiting NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. Campers ranged in age from 18 to 80 and had the opportunity to experience aspects of NASA that were otherwise unavailable to them.

None of the other images have much of a back-story to them, but instead just fit my narrative.

Update: July 28, 2017

Transcripts for the talks are available from the conference web site. Since the home page is just a long scroll of recent content, the transcripts may change address so I grabbed the PDF transcript from my talk and host it here. There is no video from my talk, and the transcript is off in places, but at least it’s available.

Separately, Accessible Media Inc. has posted its episode of AMI Inside that covers the conference. It is season 3 episode 16, broadcast on July 13, 2017.
